Independent Project

The main idea for my project was juxtaposition. I wanted to challenge the ideals of colonialism and mysoginy. I was inspired to have my first portrait feature Tina Fontaine when I heard that her killer, Raymond Cormier, was found not guilty of her death. It is an understatement to say that I and many other people are disappointed to hear that in Canada, a country that is considered a leader in human rights and democracy, a white man can get away with the killing of a fifteen year old aboriginal girl. I find this case especially disturbing because Tina was the same age as me when she died and I know that Tina's case is not unique. I chose to do Angela Davis for my second one because she has always been a woman whom I admire and look up to.  Davis is one of the most influential people in social and political activism, feminism, and the black panther movement. Angela is known for being devoted to her education and educating others. I admire how hard she worked to combat segregation, racism, and mysoginy and how devoted she is to trying to make the world a better place.

I was inspired to do this project by an article I had seen while I was looking for ideas for this project. The article featured a Tumblr account that had photoshopped Beyonce into multiple famous paintings. I like this idea as it suggests an alternative to the faces we are used to seeing in these paintings and opens room for a dialogue

I first chose the paintings I wanted to recreate ad the photos of the women I chose. I then graphed the paintings and my paper. I then made the outline in pencil and then did it in pen. Then I coloured it in and polished it o
